Yiannoudi grape
A recently rediscovered local red that is beginning to make a name for itself.
Splendid ruby colour, good fruit and acidity, with body and tannin. Aromas of berries and Cypriot countryside flora. The round, thick-skinned berries give deep-coloured wines with firm tannins; winemakers often compare it with Maratheftiko.
Results so far have encouraged further plantings. Grown mainly in Pitsilia, the Krasochoria of Lemesos and at Vouni Panagias, on about 14 hectares. Its flowers are female, which holds back the crop, and growers say it gives a good yield only some years.
