Ampeli

Ofthalmo grape

A local variety grown in small amounts, mainly in the Pitsilia area and parts of Pafos.

Usually pale in colour with light body and low acidity — wines to drink fresh. Mostly blended, with Maratheftiko, Mavro or Cabernet Sauvignon; today it is found mainly in a few boutique wineries' blends.

The name means “ox-eye”, after the shape of its berries. Grown in small amounts across the island, mostly in Pitsilia — Agros and Agios Theodoros — and around Pafos; Pitsilia gives the best results. DNA analysis in 2005 found it closely related to Spourtiko.
